VBS Day 1

The theme for the first day of VBS is “I am the Light of the World” John 8:12.

As 800 children began to assemble on the field in front of the high school, we were overwhelmed by the sheer number of kids in front of us, how well they behaved, and their beautiful singing voices as they serenaded us as a greeting.

Our part began with a skit. Dave was “Dark Man” who tried to persuade Michelle to come to the darkness, while Pastor Ruwisch as the narrator repeatedly reminded everyone, Jesus said, ‘I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ Don’t worry, Michelle came back to the light. Unfortunately, Dave did not! After a message from Pastor David Stecker, we broke off into groups. The craft activities reflected the theme. Children made paper torches and appear lanterns with tea lights. We also brought down recreation activities, including frisbees, a parachute, and kickball.

We wish we had more pictures, but as you can imagine, we were a little busy occupying hundreds of children at a time. None of us could break away to take pictures of the activities.

The day’s activities ran a little longer than usual. We regrouped back at the guest house, had a late lunch, and debriefed. We spent the rest of the day prepping for Day 2 crafts and activities. Tune back in tomorrow!
